Summary:
This project comprised the refurbishment of and alterations to three existing buildings located at the Walford Campus of Walford and North Shropshire College. The existing building uses comprised a former Tractor Shed as well as the Grade 2 Listed Stables Barns and the existing two-storey building known as The Cannery.
The existing buildings were converted to create a new Rural Skills Centre. The scheme benefited from the receipt of grant funding.
The works involved sympathetic alterations to the existing buildings, working closely with the local Conservation Officer, to create teaching spaces as well as offices and other ancillary accommodation.
Considerable repair works were necessary to the existing structures in order to make them ‘fit for purpose’ to suit their new use. This included careful replacement of defective existing masonry with new lime mortar brickwork to match and the replacement of existing structural timbers.
Other works included upgrading the existing insulation properties of the buildings, the replacement of existing doors and windows and the installation of new rooflights. New gas fired heating, plumbing and ventilation systems were installed, together with new electrical installations throughout.
Work on the refurbishment commenced in June 2013 and was completed in December 2013.
On this project, Metrics were appointed as both Quantity Surveyors and CDM Co-ordinators.
